The Michelada

michelada

Ice cold beer, lime juice, spices, tomato juice, hot sauce and ice! For ultimate enjoyment serve in a chilled salt rim glass!

The michelada is the pinnacle of spicy refreshment. Though slightly unorthodox, and maybe even counter intuitive, it is a much-loved summer refreshment in Mexico and the United States.

The Michelada has it all, salt, tartness, heat from the spice and hot sauce, and the refreshing finish of an icy-cold beer. This is a tasty and unique cocktail and a great low-alcohol option if you’re watching your alcohol intake.

Spicy (but refreshing) Summer Cocktail

Great with a meal, maybe those fish tacos we tried out previously, but also a moreish and satisfyingly-sessionable cocktail to be savoured on a lazy summer afternoon. Think Bloody Mary but spritzy and beer flavoured!

The Michelada couldn’t be any easier to put together – unless someone else did it for you. It is a simple drink but surprisingly layered and complex. The art to this drink is balancing the competing flavour profiles to reach the perfect refreshing result.  No need to buy yourself a fancy cocktail-kit -absolutely no shaking or stirring necessary - simply build this cocktail in a tall beer glass and you’re ready for some serious refreshment.

Ingredients:

  • Coarse salt (for salt rim)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of basil
  • Pinch of oregano
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 5ml Worcestershire Sauce
  • 30-60ml of fresh lime juice
  • 30ml Tomato juice (optional)
  • 1 cold larger style beer (preferably Mexican)
  • 15ml hot sauce of your choosing (preferably Mexican)
  • Ice cubes

Step One

Pour some coarse salt onto a small plate. Wipe the rim of the glass with a lime wedge then dip the rim into the salt mixture. Set the glass down and add ice cubes to your desired level.

Step Two

Add spices, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and lime juice before filling the remainder of the glass with cold beer. Garnish with a final squeeze of a lime wedge and drop it in the glass.

Step Three

Enjoy!

Keep the leftover beer with you and top your drink up as you sip. Adjust the ingredients to your personal taste. For a tarter drink, add more lime juice. For a spicy kick, dial up the hot sauce. If you enjoy a more savoury profile, add in some tomato juice. This one is about you! Make it what you want!
